LATEST LEGION REVEALS @ AMG's Ministravaganza
For those who weren't able to catch AMG's latest reveal stream or were just simply dumbfounded by the amount to take in, here's is a lot of it (there's probably things missing) that we caught from the stream.
The Mandalorian
We can expect the Mandalorian and other units from his series in early 2023. When designing Din, AMG went through a lot of iterations and rules changes as well as a number of different ways of representing his armoury of weapons. This unit is inspired by Season 1 of the Mandalorian, so no Dark Saber! Of course, this doesn't stop new versions of Mando in the future.
We have known that Din Djarin was coming to Legion for a while now, but now we get a look at his and Grogus' Unit cards. Din has an aggressive build with the ability to throw 5 black in Melee with Surge: Crit and Lethal 1 utilising his Arsenal 2 keyword. He also has Versatile on his Pistol, allowing him to shoot whilst engaged. He can get aims easily from his Independent and Tactical 1, allowing him to make use of the Lethal 1 and Longshot 1 on his range 1-2 pistol. The big draw back from this is the lack of Sharpshooter.
Din can be taken by both the Rebels and Imperials, giving the Rebel Alliance access to the Bounty keyword for the first time (sad GAR noises).
Din's Amban rifle is one of his signature pieces. As well as buffing Din's melee attack to 5 black with Immobilize 2, it can also be used to give a 3/4 chance of an auto wound and suppression on a unit anywhere on the board, as long as they can be seen by Din. However, this does take both of Din's actions for the turn. Another of Din's well-known tricks are the Whistling Birds, which AMG have incorporated via a Command Card. Something that has the potential to wipe out 24 models (if Din is in the thick of a B1 horde) in one action, could get pretty spicy!
Grogu has his own tricks up his cute little sleeves. First off, if he dies, this gives your opponent a chance to get a victory token if they can claim his body. You need to get hold of him to stop this, but you don't get the victory token. Latent Power allows you to wave Grogu's hands and either provide some healing power to one of your units or cause some problems for an enemy unit.
That isn't the last of Grogu....meet your friendly IG series droids...
IG Droids
Here we have IG-88, with the ability to pile more firepower into 1 unit with it's Arsenal 2 for the Empire. On the flipside, IG-11 can attack multiple units at once with it's Gunslinger keyword for both the Empire and Rebels. IG-11 also has to take a programmed upgrade slot, 1 of which has been revealed below. Note, the current programmed upgrades we have in legion are all 'vehicle only' and so cannot be used.
This upgrade allows IG-11 to take Grogu as a counterpart as well as gaining an AI. These units come with 5 command cards, 2 specific to each version of the IG-Droid and 1 general one. One of these will allow the droid to self-destruct.
On the stream, AMG said that Grogu can only be taken by Rebels, but there is nothing obvious on his unit card that states or restricts this....time shall tell, I'm sure.
Boba Fett
'The Old and Wise' Boba Fett is a Rebel only unit, and has a pretty cool model (although we know tactical rocks aren't everyone's cup of tea)!
Boba has Independent: Standby, showing how he has matured and learnt from his past and ensures he is ready for anything. Paired with Sentinel, a unit at range 3 can pop his standby.
His 3 new command cards all play into this improved sense of understanding of cooperation Boba has gained. They all help others as well as helping himself. Imperial players will rejoice at needing to buy an unusable model to get the benefits of these command cards for their Boba.
Dark Troopers and Moff Gideon - Imperial Remnant Battle Force
So, Din, Boba and Grogu are going to need something to fight! The all new 'Imperial Remnant Battle force' will introduce Moff Gideon and his Heavy (!!) Dark Troopers. The battle force will bring a mix of different Imperial units together and allow a strange mixture of forces to work with each other. Whilst they didn't give specifics, could they allow heavy weapons to be attached to different units that normal. Snipers in Storm units, or T-21s on Death Troopers?
The Dark Troopers are one of the weirdest and most different units designed in Legion yet. Let's walk through the key things to look at:
They can take 2 Heavy Weapons. There are 3 different choices available, 1 of which is called the Frag Cannon - lots of red dice Surging to Crit perhaps!?
They are a heavy unit! No they aren't a tank, and they have 3 models as their base unit, before you even think about what heavies you might add!
They have full Armour, as you might expect from a Heavy unit.
Plodding is back! Remember plodding? It was removed from the game with updates to the e-Web. For those who don't know, it means that the unit can only perform 1 standard move during an activation. For a Speed 1 unit this could be quite limiting...but wait.
A new keyword, Unconcerned. The Dark Troopers don't care for cover or waiting to be repaired.
Another new keyword, Unstoppable. For each Dark Trooper unit in your list, you add two Heavy tokens. So each unit has 2 tokens rather than 1. This means they get to activate twice per round!
You can also give the unit a programming upgrade, for which there will be 2 available.
All in all, these are going to be expensive units, but given what they have the potential to do, you can see why. These are going to be really fun to play!
Of course, where you find Dark Troopers, you will probably find Moff Gideon somewhere close by. He is likely going to have Entourage: Imperial Dark Trooper and has a command card which allows you to pick up 1 unit of Dark Troopers and move them almost anywhere you want on the board. To do this you have to forgo 1 of their 2 activations.
Moff Gideon will have the Dark Saber available to him. You can also see from the Dark Trooper models that AMG are probably doing away with the clear flight stands and are moving towards other posing methods for models that are in the air - something that I am personally pleased to see.
Ewoks!
Ewoks were hinted at in the last Ministravaganza but we are starting to get more details, but no unit cards. Ewoks will have melee (spears) and ranged (bows and slings) versions, but it's likely that the melee versions are going to be the most potent as you are going to want to get the force up close to the enemy. There are also Heavy Weapons available (the axe) and Specialists (the trapper). The trapper will be making log traps to help against one of the ewok's weak spots - facing Armour!
Ewoks will be mercenaries, available as part of a new Rebel Battle force but also available to be taken by a normal Rebel army (following the normal mercenary rules and limitations). This new Battle force will also focus on Rebel Commandos and all of the characters that we saw in the Battle of Endor.
Ewoks suffer from suppression more than most units and so will need ways to mitigate suppression. Logray, an Ewok commander will help to do this as well as supplying tokens to units allowing them to venture further forwards. Will we see Independent: Suppression or perhaps panicking at their courage value rather than the normal double level? Ewoks are going to be a potent anti-infantry army capable of moving through difficult terrain easily, setting traps as they go. One of the new cards that the Ewoks will have access to allows them to steal an enemy Heavy weapon and destroy it. As well as Logray, Wicket will be available as commander. Logray will fill the support commander role where Wicket will be more of an offensive force to be reckoned with.
What else could you be asking for....didn't Chewie help some ewoks to take over an AT-ST I hear you say....what?
Yes, you read it, the Ewoks will have access to an AT-ST. If you take a look at this AMG art to the right, you can see some Ewok eyes piloting the Heavy vehicle. We know that this AT-ST will have Incognito and Inspire, again helping to mitigate the ewok's fear of suppression. All in all, this looks a fun battle force. We know the standard Ewok units will have the largest model count in legion yet, so at least 7 as the base unit!
Now, the Battle of Endor wasn't one sided. The Imperial garrison on Endor was called Tempest Force and this is the name of the next Imperial Battle force coming to Legion. With a focus on Scouts and everything you see on Endor for the Imperials you will be able to stage your own Battle of Endor on the table top.
We can expect these to release mid-2023, around the time of the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi.
Expect more reveals over the coming days, but this has given us all a thirst for what's to come in Legion in 2023!
